In this post we will explore the different types of leadership styles and provide some details on how to know when to apply a specific type of leadership. Leadership styles refer to the ways in which leaders guide, influence, and motivate their teams or organizations. Different styles can be effective in different situations, and leaders often adapt their style depending on the context and the people they are working with. Here are some of the most common leadership styles:

1. Autocratic Leadership
Characteristics: The leader makes decisions unilaterally without much input from team members.
Advantages: Can lead to quick decision-making and clear direction, especially in times of crisis.
Disadvantages: Can lead to low morale and a lack of creativity as team members may feel disconnected from the process.

2. Democratic (Participative) Leadership
Characteristics: The leader encourages team members to participate in decision-making and values their input.
Advantages: Can result in higher morale, increased creativity, and a stronger sense of ownership among team members.
Disadvantages: Decision-making can be slower, as it requires consultation with others.

3. Transformational Leadership
Characteristics: The leader seeks to inspire and motivate employees by creating a vision for the future and encouraging personal and professional growth.
Advantages: Leaders in this style are typically very inspiring and can build strong loyalty and enthusiasm within the team.
Disadvantages: Can sometimes be too focused on big picture goals and may overlook the details or day-to-day needs.

4. Transactional Leadership
Characteristics: The leader focuses on structured tasks, rewards, and penalties to motivate employees.
Advantages: Clear expectations, a focus on productivity, and well-defined roles.
Disadvantages: Can lead to a lack of innovation, as it tends to focus on maintaining the status quo and rewarding existing behaviors.

5. Laissez-Faire Leadership
Characteristics: The leader takes a hands-off approach and allows team members to make their own decisions and work independently.
Advantages: Encourages autonomy and can empower experienced and self-motivated teams.
Disadvantages: Can lead to a lack of direction and accountability, especially in teams that need more guidance or structure.

6. Servant Leadership
Characteristics: The leader focuses on serving the needs of the team, putting others’ interests first, and helping people develop and perform as highly as possible.
Advantages: Builds trust and loyalty, promotes teamwork, and emphasizes the well-being of team members.
Disadvantages: Can sometimes be seen as too passive or overly focused on the team’s needs at the expense of organizational goals.

7. Charismatic Leadership
Characteristics: The leader relies on their personal charisma and ability to inspire and energize their followers.
Advantages: Highly motivating and energizing, and can help build a strong, loyal following.
Disadvantages: Can be overly dependent on the leader’s personal traits, which can make the team vulnerable if the leader leaves or falters.
Now that we have provided a list of the different types of leadership, which is by no means exhaustive, rather it includes the most common and broadest categories of leadership. When it comes to leadership, there is not a one size fits all approach and typically most leaders will employee a hybrid approach that utilizes multiple styles. It is also important to understand that different leadership styles may be needed to address teams as they move through the various stages of team formation, see our other post on team motivation and formation for more on this topic.
Personally, I tend to employee a mix of servant and transformational leadership, which means that I see myself as someone who is there to provide my team with the tools and resources necessary to be successful and to help transform individual team members to be the best version of themselves, so that they can make a meaningful contribution. I try to live by the virtue of leave everything better than you found it.
